composer

Tom has been on hiatus from composing since 2020 - he intends this to change soon. He has previously music that explored the theatrical and physical potential of the performer, as well as the listener's perceptions of physical space inherent in music. He used non-12EDO tuning systems, subtle shades of different timbres, and a sort of semi-functional approach to harmony to go about this. Tom has written for a variety of different ensembles and performers, most recently having his piece by spatial invitation only performed by euphoniumist Tom Coen. Tom also developed his own method to compose vocal music in languages he doesn’t speak that highlights the prosodic features and ensures semantic comprehension of the original text. He has used this approach with French and Finnish texts, and is looking to develop the method further by using it on more languages.

Extending from his composing, Tom is a meticulous copyist, transcriber and proofreader. He has most recently assisted with music preparation for Little Shop of Horrors, Miss Saigon, Standing at the Sky’s Edge and She Loves Me (Sheffield Theatres), The Devil Wears Prada (Dominion Theatre West End), Rooftoppers (in development), Flip the Stem, Are You As Nervous As I Am? (Greenwich Theatre), Treasure Island and The Book Thief (Bolton Octagon), and The Wizard of Oz (Leeds Playhouse). Tom uses the most up-to-date version of Sibelius and is additionally equipped to use MainStage and Kontakt.
