researcher

A culmination of Tom’s first significant research interest, the potency and application semantics within music, is best seen in his article “‘Just a word on a stave and there is the opera’: the interaction between music and libretto in Philip Venables’ 4.48 Psychosis”, published by TEMPO in 2021.

Tom’s ongoing research area is the the spatiality of music, and how music can affect listeners’ perception of space and vice versa. He engages in this research through his compositional practice, as well as by recording and making sound, and documenting written observations. Tom hopes to disseminate his research and approaches to spatially-aware music-making, by furthering his own perceptions of space and working to develop a spatial lexicography, so composers and listeners alike can start to cultivate a greater awareness of how space can be a significant element of their musical experiences.
